The Debate Over Open Balloting
With yet another effort over transparency in senate polls, the government of PTI had first sought advisory opinion from supreme court over the matter under Article 226 of the constitution but then without waiting for the apex court’s decision, President Arif Alvi signed the Elections (Amendment) Ordinance 2021, which is conditional upon the advisory opinion of the apex court.
This should have been a welcome move and all parties should have embraced it whole-heartedly. After all, vote-purchasing can discourage any sincere efforts on the part of democratic governments and is applicable to all. The use of money in senate polls should end now.
However, one must not be so naïve and simplistic to assume
that the PTI government is doing this without any gains and hidden motives. It is
believed among leading journalists that the government is in a haste to get
this approved out of lack of trust among its own members. It is also the part
of routine discussions that PDM is of the hope that some members from the
ruling party may vote against their party, therefore PDM had no announcement on
resignations till then.
It is clear for now that there is no room for consensus between ruling party and the PDM over open balloting, which is a serious matter and should be dealt with wisdom and based on long term benefits.
